About the job

Intro:

Scania’s aim is to drive the shift towards a sustainable transport system, creating a world of mobility that is better for business, society and the environment. Scania is facing a transformation journey, where we are going from a product driven to a transport solution driven company. In this transformation journey, software and data will shape our future business model. Scania is dedicated to keeping its position as the leading transport solution provider while decarbonizing the transport sector. Scania's three pillars to maintain its position are: energy efficiency, renewable fuels and electrification, and smart and safe transport.

Background:

The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from IT systems supporting road transport is increasing significantly along with digitalisation. To ensure that the negative climate impact of our IT systems are minimized, we calculate GHG emissions from upstream activities, operations, down-stream activities and end-of-life. Knowledge on how these values relate to real world environmental capacity is key.

Target:

The outcome shall be a thesis describing the GHG emission of IT systems from autonomous vehicles in the use phase, which can be published by the University. The technical report that finalise the thesis has the aim to spread the result and knowledge around the organisation and serve as a fact base for software development activities as well as supporting marketing and commercial activities.

Assignment:

The assignment is to calculate GHG emissions of IT systems from the use phase of autonomous vehicles. The student will conduct an extensive investigation of the software supporting autonomous vehicles and of the energy used. Work will include identifying, classifying and quantifying of energy consumption, GHG emissions and assigning appropriate data sets. The model shall have a holistic view of the total GHG emissions generated by IT systems from the use phase of autonomous vehicles.
