Are you an engineering student looking for your thesis work opportunity? For the spring semester of 2027, we are offering two exciting thesis opportunities within our Research & Development organisation.
The R&D organisation in Westermo is responsible for developing the technologies and products that enable secure and reliable industrial data communication around the world. Our engineers work with everything from hardware design and embedded software to networking, cyber security, cloud solutions, automation, and emerging technologies.
As part of R&D, you will work in a highly innovative environment where new ideas are encouraged and where collaboration between Development, Operations, and Quality is key to bringing solutions from concept to reality. This thesis provides a unique opportunity to combine academic research with practical application in a modern industrial environment.
This thesis explores the feasibility and implementation strategies for emulating hardware-level behavior, such as temperature, voltage, and PHY characteristics including duplex and link speed, which can be run in environments such as GNS3 for evaluation. The primary objective is to evaluate how these hardware aspects, typically tied to physical hardware platforms, can be realistically represented in a virtual environment to support testing, diagnostics, and development.
Suitable background: Bachelor or Master in Dependable systems, Robotics, Computer Science or similar.
Number of students: 1 person
This thesis investigates the use of artificial intelligence for fault diagnosis in industrial Ethernet networks. The proposed system analyses network telemetry provided by existing network configuration software to identify anomalies and determine probable root causes. The research evaluates the accuracy and reliability of AI-assisted diagnostics in mission-critical environments. The outcome is a prototype framework for intelligent network troubleshooting, with the objective of reducing fault-resolution time.
Suitable background: Bachelor or Master in Computer Science, Robotics, Applied AI or similar.
Number of students: 1-2
Background: Westermo is about to develop a first-generation simplified Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) model based on existing life cycle assessments. The objective is to enable scalable carbon footprint calculations across the entire product portfolio without requiring detailed carbon data for every individual component.
Purpose: Evaluate how well a simplified PCF model performs for industrial electronic products and to investigate which data sources and parameters have the greatest impact on the quality, accuracy, and usability of the results.
The project includes validating the model across multiple products, analyzing uncertainties and data quality, and providing recommendations for the continued development of a future scalable PCF solution.
Suitable Backgrounds: Master's level engineering programmes with an interest in sustainability, life cycle assessment (LCA), data analysis, energy systems, or product development.
Number of Students: 1 student
Background: How can a company ensure that the correct product is built before full-scale production begins? In manufacturing, product verification is a critical step in ensuring quality, reducing costly mistakes, and maintaining customer confidence. One important process is the inspection and validation of the first manufactured product to confirm that it meets all specified requirements. This process is often manual, time-consuming, and highly dependent on documentation and checklists. At the same time, increasing digitalization creates opportunities for automation and improved efficiency.
Purpose: Improve the process (preferably with automation) used to verify that newly manufactured products meet all defined requirements before entering full-scale production. In the thesis, you could be mapping and analyze the current verification process, identify bottlenecks and improvement opportunities, evaluate tools, and assessing risks and security aspecst of automated workflows.
Suitable Backgrounds: Bachelor students in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Automarion, Engineering Physicl or similar. Programming experience is a must
Number of Students: 2 students
