Do you want to be involved in the development of high-tech products that save lives? We offer you good career opportunities in a high-tech company with strong company values, transparency and personal development.

Background:

Magna develop ECUs (Electronic Control Units) for the automotive industry.
The Failure Analysis teams analyze ECUs with failures reported, usually the failures are reported from Magna production or the customer.

ECU production verification is a complex process. Only fault free ECUs are shipped to customer, yet some of the ECUs that have passed production verification fail later and are then returned to Magna. Being able to identify potential customer returns already in the Magna production process would be of great value.

The objective of this master thesis is to investigate if a method can be found to, based on production verification logs, identify ECUs that appear to be fault free but are likely to fail in the future. The method can for example be a machine learning algorithm that can find patterns in production verification logs that are hard to spot for humans.

As input, Magna has large quantities of logs, measurements and statistics from produced ECUs. The failure Analysis teams have serial numbers, failure analysis and fault type for each returned ECU. Production verification logs can be found for these specific ECUs.

Purpose:

To get a method for early identification of potential future failing ECUs. Reason for estimated probability may be used to update product design and/or the production process.

Field: Data analysis, statistics and prediction.

Learning objectives:
  • Production verification
  • Log analysis
  • Failure analysis
