VP Engineer

We are looking for a VP Engineering to lead our engineering organisation and drive the technical agenda forward.

The role combines engineering leadership, technical direction and business partnership. You will lead the organisation while staying close to the technology, with responsibility for architecture, modernisation, delivery and technical quality.

Our core platform moves billions in transactions a year across EMEA, the US and Australia. Fast growth and acquisitions made it powerful and complicated in equal measure. You are here to modernise it while the teams keep shipping.

AI is central to the technology agenda. The organisation is already using AI in development, with ambitions to take this further into AI-native engineering and agentic capabilities in our products.

At HQ, engineering supports VetPlan, our preventive care subscription product; Data Engineering, the group’s data and analytics platform; Clinic Experience, our clinic-facing products and member portal; and our AI agentic development team.

In this role you will:

• Lead and develop the engineering organisation through team leads and senior engineers
• Drive architecture, technical direction and platform modernisation
• Advance AI adoption and agentic development
• Develop the data platform and explore data monetisation opportunities
• Support technical due diligence and technology integration in acquisitions
• Improve engineering processes, ways of working and delivery
• Manage technology resources, vendors and partners

Four teams, three languages in production, and a data platform built on Snowflake and dbt. Some of that breadth is deliberate, some of it is history. Deciding what to keep, what to change and where to create consistency is part of the job.

The role is based in Stockholm, with colleagues also in France and Germany.

You are an experienced engineering leader with strong technical depth, business understanding and a hands-on approach. You have led engineering organisations through growth and change and are comfortable combining people leadership with technical responsibility.

We are looking for:

• Experience leading engineering teams through team leads and/or engineering managers, including hiring, development and performance
• A background as a software engineer or architect, with the technical depth to challenge senior developers and engage in architecture and implementation decisions
• Experience modernising complex, business-critical technology while maintaining delivery
• Strong practical experience with AI in software engineering, and a clear perspective on AI and agentic technology
• The ability to connect technical decisions to business priorities and commercial outcomes
• Experience working with complex data environments and/or data-driven products
• An entrepreneurial, hands-on and collaborative approach to leadership
• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a similar field, or equivalent experience

Nice to have:

• Experience from SaaS, subscription or data-driven businesses
• Experience from an international or decentralised organisation
• Experience with M&A, technical due diligence or technology integration
• Experience from veterinary, healthcare or a related industry – or a genuine interest in animals and veterinary care
