About Humans since 1982:
We are a pioneering studio based in Stockholm, working at the intersection of design, art, and technology. Our kinetic installations, including A million Times and ClockClock, have found audiences around the world. Among our collectors are institutions such as the Vitra Design Museum, companies including OpenAI, as well as global thought leaders across business and culture.
Our work is guided by a simple idea: “Form follows fascination.” Curiosity is where every project begins. While the outcomes often take the form of physical objects, we approach them dramaturgically, arranging anticipation, surprise, and resolution.
About the role
What you'll do
Redesign and optimize the power architecture to support a large number of synchronized units operating from a shared power system
Strengthen and scale the communication architecture for a multi-node installation
Develop, test, and harden embedded firmware for reliable long-term operation
Diagnose and resolve system-level reliability issues across hardware and software
Prototype, validate, and refine solutions through hands-on testing
Bring the system to a production-ready, reproducible state within the project timeline
Who we think you are
You have successfully delivered embedded electronics products from prototype through production
A strong embedded firmware engineer, ideally with C/C++ on platforms such as STM32, ESP32, or similar MCUs
Comfortable with hardware bring-up, debugging, and system integration
A solid understanding of power electronics, motor control, and electromechanical systems
You thrive in independent, senior-level roles and communicate clearly in a remote working environment
Nice to have: CAN bus or other industrial communication protocols · EMC, electrical safety, or compliance experience · motion-control systems at scale · embedded Linux.
Engagement
Contract / project-based engagement
Approximately 32 hours per week
Minimum 3-month commitment, with the possibility of extension
Start date: August–September 2026
Remote, with a strong preference for on-site time in Stockholm during key development, testing, and integration phases
Opportunity for additional project work beyond the initial engagement
What we offer
Ownership of a technically ambitious and highly visible project
Direct collaboration with our technical lead and senior hardware advisor
Flexible working with overlap across European working hours
The opportunity to contribute to internationally recognised design and art projects
A rare working environment at the intersection of engineering, design, and contemporary art
We review applications on a rolling basis, with interviews from August.
Culture at Humans since 1982
At Humans since 1982, we work in a small but distinctive field where design, art, and engineering meet. Our studio creates collectible pieces that require patience, precision, and a genuine fascination for how things work, unfold and surprise over time.
We are a curious and collaborative team. Everyone in the studio is trusted to take ownership of their work, think independently, and contribute ideas beyond their immediate role. At the same time, our projects are collective efforts, built through dialogue, shared curiosity, and a respect for each other’s craft.
The studio still operates with an entrepreneurial spirit. We are flexible and move quickly when ideas take shape, but we also recognise that meaningful work takes care and attention. As we continue our journey, every person in the team helps shape not only the work we create, but the culture of the studio.
