Principal Systems Architect

We’re looking for a System Architect to contribute to evolving IAR’s “Embedded Workbench” from a monolithic structure into a modern, component-based ecosystem. As a System Architect, you’ll define, maintain, and evolve the overall architecture of our products, ensuring that technical components integrate seamlessly through clear, stable, and scalable interfaces. You’ll enable our future business models by reinventing how IAR Embedded Workbench is built, transforming it into a modular system where core elements can be delivered as independent components.

You’ll bridge engineering teams, guiding architectural choices that balance innovation, reliability, backward compatibility, and sustainable development, aligned with our product strategy.

You will:

• Drive System-Level Architecture: Drive architectural decisions across the entire system, bridging gaps, breaking dependencies, and driving change without compromising performance or safety.
• Lead Monolith Decomposition: Drive the strategy to separate tightly coupled systems into independent, testable components.
• Design Stable Interfaces: Define and enforce stable, versioned interfaces, ensuring that we can evolve our internal components without breaking backward compatibility with our customers
• Incremental Modernization: Utilize strategies to renew the codebase step-by-step, reducing technical debt while keeping feature delivery on track
• Embed Safety & Security by Design: Ensure that risk controls and standards for Functional Safety and Cybersecurity are integrated into the architectural blueprint.

You are proactive and driven by continuous learning, and you actively stay updated on modern architectural patterns and market trends. You take initiative to drive change, identifying necessary improvements and turning them into action.

To succeed in this role, you have:

• At least 10 years of experience in professional software development, with the last 3–5 years spent as a System Architect or in an equivalent role with end-to-end responsibility for complex systems.
• You possess a strong foundation in C/C++ and embedded systems development, allowing you to understand the complexity our teams deal with daily.
• You have previously worked in environments with strict safety and compliance requirements (e.g., Automotive, MedTech, or Industrial Automation), giving you familiarity with risk controls and standards required.
• As we are a global organization, you are fluent in spoken and written English.
