Thesis work: 30hp - Gas Behaviour in Polymer Melts for Microcellular Injection Moulding

Om denna position

Introduction
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Traton and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Traton career with their degree project.

Background
Weight reduction of plastic parts is a growing area of interest. It helps cut down on material use, lowers CO2 emissions, and saves energy during production. Traton is exploring a cost-effective way to reduce the weight of plastic components, with the goal of using it in heavy-duty trucks. Since these vehicles significantly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, making them lighter can lead to lower fuel consumption and a smaller environmental footprint, supporting global sustainability goals.

One promising method is microcellular injection moulding, a well-established technique that creates lightweight plastic parts by introducing gas into the material. Traton is evaluating a new process for this technique and a key part of the research is understanding how the gas mixes and diffuses through the melted plastic during injection moulding, which is crucial for consistent material performance. In this master thesis you will get the chance to be part of this research and help shape the future of sustainable manufacturing at Traton.

Objective
The aim of this thesis is to investigate how gas behaves in the polymer melt during microcellular injection moulding. You will study the conditions that affect gas solubility and distribution, and how different process settings influence foam formation in plastic components used in heavy-duty trucks. The goal is to support the development of a cost-effective and sustainable manufacturing method.

Job description
The thesis will include:

1. Literature review on gas-polymer interactions and microcellular injection moulding.
2. Planning and performing lab experiments to study how gas dissolves and diffuses in polymer melts under different process conditions.
3. Analysing results to evaluate limitations of existing solubility models and their relevance for microcellular injection moulding.
4. Collaborating with engineers and researchers at Traton to contribute to innovative research in lightweight design for heavy-duty vehicles.
