About the job

Introduction:
Scania is one of the leading European manufacturers of heavy‑duty vehicles (HDV), with global sales of 66'900 trucks, 5'190 buses and 10'990 engines in 2020. When it comes to energy consumption (EC) and global warming, we actively contribute to the necessary reduction of EC and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) with the development of battery-electric vehicles (BEV).

Background:
The ongoing electrification of HDV powertrains leads to the need to understand and precisely quantify the energy consumers in a BEV, due to the limited capacity and high cost of their energy storages, which restrict the range. For Scania's main segment, long haul (LH) trucks which drive mostly at high velocities on motorways, the road load (RL) is known to be the biggest consumer. The road load is the sum of the tyres' rolling resistance (RR) and the complete vehicle's air drag, which show both a significant dependency on the weather.

The tasks are to i) calculate RL for selected diesel LH trucks from the in-house haulier Scania Transport Laboratory, which drive between Copenhagen (DK) and Zwolle (NL) and are equipped with automatic data loggers, split RL into RR and air drag, and separate the impacts from gross train weight, ambient temperature, precipitation and wind ii) set up vehicle models of the selected diesel trucks in the standardised simulation tool VECTO to match road load and fuel consum., and then replace the diesel powertrain with a BEV powertrain, to determine the weather impacts on EC and range.

Target:
The outcome shall be an English thesis on the road load of present-day LH trucks, which can be published by the University. It shall also serve as technical report for Traton, thus for the companies MAN, Scania and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus.

Assignment:
- Calculate the road load of selected diesel long haul trucks, as described above

- Simulate models of those diesel long haul trucks and the equivalent BEVs in VECTO.
