The position

As a Principal Backend Engineer at Viaplay, you will actively drive and participate in conversations regarding the tech vision to ensure that we develop the platform to meet the challenges of a continuously growing user base. With your passion for technical leadership and willingness to act as a role model for others, you will be an advocate for the developer community and facilitate the development of technical strategies in your domain.

You will join a cross-functional team and deliver engineering solutions aligned with technical and product long-term visions. We build our entire product in-house with apps in native languages and a microservice backend on Node.js in AWS. We strongly believe that being on the edge of things when it comes to technology is crucial, always keeping ourselves up to date and constantly challenging the status quo. As Principal Engineer, you will play an important role in this by bringing clarity to complexity and demonstrate smart ways to simply ensuring that we build a world-class streaming experience.

As our product grows to new customers and expands to new countries and regions, our top priority is to have a scalable and resilient platform to exceed the expectations of our audience.

Some of your daily challenges will include - but not be limited to:

  • Develop and drive technical strategy across teams and across product areas. 
  • Create customer value by building resilient and high performing micro-services.
  • Work with different software architectures, design patterns and frameworks.
  • Act as a mentor and coach others to grow and improve their craftsmanship.
  • Instigate product iterations based on consumer feedback and behaviour data. 
What we are looking for

We are looking for a passionate and experienced developer with a genuine interest in software development and leadership. We believe that you are currently working in a role as Principal Engineer, Technical Lead, Technical Director or Technical Architect, and have experience of working with a variety of challenges requiring complex technical problems. 

You thrive in a high-energy, autonomous team-driven environment where you are asked to have a strategic perspective to develop our business.

Successful candidates also meet the following requirements: 

  • Extensive work-life experience developing customer-focused web-based services, using Javascript (Node.js in particular) or other modern languages.
  • Proven experience in designing highly scalable resilient services in the cloud, preferably AWS.
  • Excellent technical leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to set direction and enact change among peers.
  • Experience working with a state-less and high transactional end-user product.
  • Previously worked with people from different backgrounds, having other views and finding it inspiring. 
  • Solid experience of working in an agile environment. 

Bonus requirements that will make you stand out from the rest:

  • Experience from the media- or streaming industry. 
  • Experience from knowledge-sharing patterns and practices in a product organisation.
  • Experience in integration strategies with 3rd parties and off-the-shelf products.
